Painting our Mums

We have been writing character descriptions about Mums and on Friday we got to paint our Mums with Miss Spence who is one of our college teachers.  Come in to see them next week. There are some very beautiful Mums out there.

Science fun with Miss Spence

Yesterday we did an experiment with red cabbage water to find out whether things were acids or bases. We got to taste the different powders first and Nuala found out some were yucky!  After we finished Miss Spence gave us some sherbet to take home.

The King has arrived!

Over the last three weeks Room 1 and 2 have been looking at how Africa celebrates its customs and traditions. The class decided on holding a festival where they would help cook the lunch, go on stage and perform a dance and more importantly celebrate the arrival of their King a.k.a Mr Richardson. The menu consisted of: Bobotie and rice, boiled pumpkin, corn, buns, Yassa, Kebabs, popcorn, peanuts and banana chips. Dessert consisted of fruit punch, fruit salad and kaimati. This was followed by dried mice!

Children enjoyed cooking their meal and performing for their King. The food was not to everyone's taste. The mice to the children's delight were not real.

Cricket players of the future

We have been practicing our cricket skills when the sun is shining. The children are working on their ball handling skills as well as their hand eye co-ordination when hitting the ball. It has been rewarding watching the children succeed in hitting the ball for the first time.

Finding out about baptism

We are currently looking at the sacraments and in particular baptism. Today we visited Father Aiden and he talked to us about what happens at baptism. Children had the opportunity to discuss any questions that they wanted answered.

Daisy chains

One sunny lunchtime Ilan and Neha wanted to learn how to make daisy chains. They learned quickly that the stems needed to be long so the daisies could be linked together.

What is in the newspaper?

Children in Room 1 and 2 have been allocated a day to bring along either a book that they like, a photo or an article or photograph from the newspaper. Today we looked at interesting things in the newspaper we could share. Children can bring an article or photograph that is not from the current day.

Visit from Helen Clulee

Last Wednesday we were privileged to have Helen Clulee come and speak to the class. Helen lived in Africa for two years and traveled extensively while based there. Children had the opportunity to hold onto a beautiful wooden mask, soap stones and a basket that was made from plastic bags. The children had opportunities to ask questions e.g. do they have ice cream? are there swimming pools? are there children's parks?

Leo's adventures continue

Leo had a makeover yesterday just in time for the snow and hail which is falling consistently. Leo likes going to new places and has been to swimming lessons and tea parties. He also enjoys snuggles on the couch.

He is slowly working his way through the students in Room 1 and 2. We are comparing daily how different we are to children in Africa, particularly those in Malawi.

Symmetry

Today we went outside and drew symmetry patterns on the ground with chalk. We started off with basic patterns but as some children became more confident, they drew more complex designs for another child to make into a symmetrical pattern.

Leo the Lion

Leo the Lion is visiting us from Africa. He is going home with children and they are keeping a journal of his adventures with them. So far he has baked, been for a drive and played games. We are going to compare what New Zealand children do after school compared to the children from Africa.

Monkeys from Africa?

We have combined our theme of Africa with our study of symmetry and created our own version of monkeys. We have noticed that there is symmetry all around us including nature.
